# Upgrade compatibility

> Moving a NYXDB node to a newer build and what a data directory keeps across the upgrade.

A newer build opens the data directory of an earlier one: tables, versions,
definitions and checkpoints carry over. Upgrade a deployment one node at a
time; replicas keep serving while each node restarts.
